How to Plant and Grow Grass in Your Backyard This Season

After promising updated photos of our new grass-filled backyard following that Craigslist success story, the lawn has finally grown in enough to share. Instead of waiting any longer, here are the latest pictures and a quick update.

Here’s the “before” shot — it worked perfectly for our backyard wedding but was far too time-consuming to maintain:

We posted an ad on Craigslist offering free bushes and gravel, and this is what was left afterward:

Now that the grass has filled in, we have an open, low-maintenance yard that’s ideal for Burger’s bug-hunting adventures:

It isn’t perfectly lush yet, but it’s improving. By next spring it should be noticeably thicker. Our plan includes adding large stepping stones from the patio in the foreground to the woods at the back, where we’ve set up a cozy fire pit and a double hammock. Big slate or bluestone stepping stones are especially practical: when set into established grass, you can mow straight over them, eliminating the need to edge or use a weed trimmer. That kind of low-effort solution fits our approach — we prefer to spend time enjoying the yard, not maintaining it.

We’ll wait until spring to do the heavier landscaping work, but for now we’ll let Burger handle all the backyard digging.
