When we saw Stephenie’s chair makeovers, we had to share the striking before-and-after photos she sent. Here is her note:
I saw your blog post about the chairs you and your sister-in-law redid and wanted to share mine. The first set of four chairs I found at Goodwill for $2.99 each. I refinished and reupholstered them myself as a wedding gift for my younger sister. It was my first attempt at a project like this, and I’m really happy with how they turned out.

The next chair I found on eBay and had professionally reupholstered. I loved the fabric I used on my sister’s chairs so much that I used the same material for my own.

Although this chair was a larger investment than the Goodwill finds, I love it and expect to enjoy it for many years. Thanks for taking a look! – Stephenie
These transformations are inspiring: one set began as an incredibly low-cost thrift-store find and the other was a thoughtful investment with professional upholstery. Both approaches can yield beautiful, long-lasting results. If you’re considering a similar project, start by evaluating the chair’s frame and joints, remove old fabric carefully to reuse foam or replace it as needed, and choose a durable fabric that suits your style and use. Refinishing wood and applying new stain or paint can instantly modernize a piece, while clean, well-applied upholstery brings comfort and polish.
Whether you want an affordable DIY weekend project or prefer to invest in professional work for a standout piece, these makeovers show how much character and function you can add to secondhand furniture. Thanks for sharing your photos and process, Stephenie—your before-and-after shots are the kind of creative motivation that gets people excited to hunt for treasures and revitalize them.
