We had a blast house-crashing Kelly Moore last May (you can see the full visit here).

When Kelly told us she’d refreshed her outdoor space, we couldn’t wait to see the cozy haven she created on her deck. The area blends soft textures and bold colors to create an inviting, lived-in feel that’s perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

The deck features outdoor drapes, a hanging egg chair from Ikea, colorful seating from CB2, and an abundance of potted plants. Together these elements make for a warm, welcoming outdoor room with plenty of personality.

One standout is the leaning pallet planter Kelly made herself using hose clamps from the hardware store. It’s a simple, stylish way to add vertical greenery and texture to the space.

Keep in mind that not all pallets are created equal. Some are chemically treated while others are heat-sealed and safer for outdoor projects. If you’re unsure, sealing a pallet with a product like SafeCoat can add protection and peace of mind. For Kelly’s full pallet planter how-to, see her post here.

The deck steps down to a relaxed sitting area with bold seating, a chiminea, and a fire pit—perfect for cool evenings. You can find a closer look at that corner of the yard on Kelly’s blog here.

Plants appear in almost every corner, from small succulents to larger containers, bringing life and texture to the whole space.

We also loved how Kelly mixed traditional plant pots with unexpected vessels—like a vintage metal toolbox repurposed as a planter. Little touches like that add character and a sense of history to the garden.

For more details and photos of Kelly’s outdoor updates, visit her blog here. We’re grateful she shared her space—it’s always a treat to discover new nooks and thoughtful design choices in her home.
House-crashing callout: We’re looking for great homes to visit in the Atlanta, Georgia area and along the route to Richmond (including Charlotte, NC; Greenville, SC; Greensboro, NC), since we’ll be traveling for the Haven Conference soon. We’ll also be in the Bethany Beach, Delaware area later this summer (and nearby spots like Virginia Beach’s eastern shore or Annapolis, MD). If you’re interested in having your home considered, email some photos and your general location (no street address needed) to [email protected]. While we can’t promise to visit every submission, we’ll do our best to fit in as many house-crashing stops as possible.
Back to Kelly’s outdoor oasis: my favorite is the egg chair—I’m bummed it’s no longer at Ikea—but John can’t get enough of the toolbox planter.
